Welcome to The Wordy House
The Wordy House is a blog about writing skills for non-fiction work. It explores everything from grammar and punctuation to style, structure, clarity, tone of voice and a host of other word-related things. You’ll find tips on getting started, staying motivated, building confidence and connecting with your audience, whether you’re a business owner, blogger, employee, student, self-improver, or an amateur writer looking for inspiration.
We will also look at writing for social media, and blogging in particular, and will discuss the need to keep SEO (search engine optimisation) in mind.
And, because reading good stuff will help to guide and inspire your work, you will also find suggestions for books and articles that demonstrate the power and beauty of language and will embolden you to further explore the written word.
Hello, I’m Elaine Abbott, a Bath-based content writer and former magazine sub-editor. I write copy for independent businesses and specialise in online features and SEO copywriting.
I have a background in journalism and worked for 16 years as a writer and sub-editor on titles including Vogue, Marie Claire, Brides, Easy Living, John Lewis Edition, Cath Kidston, Gardens Illustrated, and British Airways High Life. I studied English literature at Cambridge University and did a postgraduate diploma in journalism studies at Cardiff University.
I now live in the Bath/Bristol area with my husband and children. I love interior design and if I’m not writing, reading, hosting play dates or supervising homework then I’ll usually be found redecorating the house. This passion for creating a cosy, comfortable home was part of my inspiration for The Wordy House – I want this blog to be a happy place where readers feel encouraged, inspired and, above all, welcome. So come on in!
